Birth educator | Birth Trauma Doula | Postpartum doula | Advocate
I’m a mother, wife, holistic birth educator, birth trauma doula and advocate!
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a mom. I have a passion for physiological birth and I advocate for women in that space.
When it came down to my own birth experience with my son, I had planned a homebirth and my world was turned upside down when I went into labour at 29 weeks after a cascade of intervention after I sought medical advice because I experienced a small haemorrhage in the middle of the night at 28 weeks. I ended up delivering my son in hospital via emergency c-section. He stayed in the NICU for 6 weeks and it was the most traumatic experience I’ve ever endured. Everything I had planned was shattered and I ended up filled with grief and emotional pain postpartum. I was grieving the experience I had wanted and planned for, I ended up filled with shame and resentment.
Throughout the healing process I realized that up to 45% of women experience birth trauma… although I believe that number is way higher. I also realized that the ONE thing that helped me to heal the most was talking about my experience and sharing my story. Every time I spoke on my story I felt more at peace. I talked with family, friends, other moms and through therapy. Although all of that was very effective BUT the one thing I felt was missing was someone who could hold space for me that understands physiological birth and the negative side of medicalized birth. Someone who supports freebirth and all birth. Someone who could truly hold space for me without judgement.
This is where I come in! I want provide a safe space for women to debrief their experience free of judgement. I want to incorporate offerings based all around healing and using your voice to take back your birth experience
About Me
I am a mother, wife, holistic birth educator, birth trauma doula and advocate.
What is Birth Trauma?
Birth trauma refers to the physical and/or psychological distress experienced during childbirth. It can result from a variety of factors, including unexpected complications, medical interventions, loss of control or autonomy, perceived or actual lack of support, or a traumatic event occurring during labor or delivery. Birth trauma can manifest differently for each person, but it often involves feelings of fear, helplessness, or a sense of being violated. It is important to note that birth trauma is not limited to individuals who have experienced a medically complicated birth; even individuals with relatively straightforward births can still experience trauma.
Types of Birth Trauma
Physical Trauma:
Physical birth trauma refers to injuries or harm experienced by the birthing person or the baby during the process of labor and delivery. This can include lacerations, perineal tears, fractures, nerve damage, or other physical injuries. Physical trauma can sometimes require medical intervention, such as sutures or surgical repair.
Psychological Trauma:
Psychological birth trauma includes the emotional and psychological impact of the birth experience. It encompasses feelings of fear, helplessness, loss of control, or a sense of violation. Psychological trauma can lead to symptoms such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, or difficulty bonding with the baby.
What is a Birth Debrief?
A birth debrief is a process that involves providing emotional support, information, and a safe space for individuals or couples to reflect on and discuss their birth experience. The purpose of a birth debrief is to help process feelings, gain clarity, and find healing or closure, if needed. Birth debriefs can be conducted by birth professionals such as doulas, midwives, or therapists who specialize in perinatal care. It could mean an informal chat or an in depth review of your medical notes and/or experiences.
